Haroset for Passover
While we were in captivity in Egypt under the cruel reign of Pharoah, we were forced to make bricks to build his palaces from straw, hay and mud. To remember the harshness of our affliction all those thousands of years ago, we eat haroset every year at Passover.
The taste is deliberately sweet, because with God, even in the midst of our pain and suffering, sweetness can still be found.

- 100 gms Walnuts (unsalted)
- 100 gms Almonds (unsalted)
- 100 gms Hazelnuts (unsalted)
- 2-3 tablespoons of castor sugar
- 1 grated apple
- 100 gms chopped dates
- 2 tablespoons red wine (sweet or dry), or grape juice
- 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- strained orange juice (enough to mix to a spreadable paste)
- Core and grate all the apples.
- Grind all the nuts until fairly fine in texture but not absolutely ground.
- Place the sugar, dates, wine, cinnamon and grated apple to a mixing bowl.
- Add the orange juice until it forms a smooth mortar-like paste.
- Add more sugar if needed to taste.
