Islam - A Background Summary
In the seventh century, a man named Mohammed was living in Mecca, Arabia. He witnessed people worshipping 360 gods at the religious center of town known as the Kabah.
One of those worshipped was the moon god known as Allah and other various names. Allah, the moon god, married the sun god and they had three daughters. Mohammed’s tribe of people were particularly devoted to the moon god and his three daughters. The symbol for worship of the moon god was the crescent moon. (This symbol still exists on the top of mosques today).
Mohammed came to believe that there is only one god. He began preaching this and those who followed were called Muslims, which means 'submitted ones', submitting to Allah as the one great god. The people of Mecca did not agree with this teaching so Mohammed and his followers were rejected from their hometown.
The Muslims then went to the Jews in Yathrib. Because of differences the Jews refused to integrate them into their community. This drove the Muslims to bitterness and resentment, leading to retaliation and murder. The Muslim’s not only attacked the Jews, but also Mohammed’s own people in Mecca.
The Holy War, (Jihad) was supposed to have been won by the teachings of Mohammed. When that didn’t work the Muslims made converts by the millions at the point of a sword. Today, Islam continues its conquest worldwide, they say that the task may take a few centuries but the world will be submitted to Allah.
